Handmade Cocobolo Chessboard with Epoxy Inlay

This one-of-a-kind chessboard is crafted from a stunning piece of Cocobolo wood, a highly prized hardwood from Central America, known for its rich color and dramatic grain. The slab used for this piece had one side nearly unusable—but due to the rarity and beauty of Cocobolo, I was determined to preserve it.

By keeping the live edge, I transformed the best portion into a fully functional and visually striking chessboard. Each square was individually cut using a handheld router, then inlaid with an opaque epoxy infused with diamond dust, allowing the grain of the wood to subtly shine through. The entire surface was sanded to a glass-like finish, then sealed with a natural oil and protected with a final wax coat.

Cocobolo has long been cherished for fine woodworking—from guitar backs to luxury tools—and due to overharvesting, it has become increasingly rare and valuable.

This chessboard is not only a functional game surface but also a unique art piece—a blend of traditional woodworking, modern materials, and natural elegance.
